India’s COVID-19 case tally crosses 1 crore-mark; death toll at 1.45 lakh

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 crossed the 1-crore mark in India on December 19, according data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
According to the data last updated on the ministry’s website at 8.00 am on December 19, the total known cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, reached 1,00,04,599. The death toll in the country due to the outbreak reached 1.45 lakh.
The country reported 25,153 new cases for the previous 24-hour period. With that, the number of single-day cases has remained under the 30,000-mark for the sixth consecutive day.
ICMR chief admitted to AIIMS after testing Covid positive

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Balram Bhargava has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after he tested positive for Covid-19.
The 59-year-old ICMR chief was admitted to AIIMS s Trauma Centre, a dedicated Covid-19 facility, on December 16, a hospital source told IANS on condition of anonymity.
Bhargava heads the apex medical body which is responsible for formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research in India. It is at the forefront of the Covid-19 outbreak management in the country.

Chlorhexidine mouthwash can kill coronavirus in 30 seconds: Study

Hyderabad: A preliminary laboratory-based research study claimed that Chlorhexidine mouthwash can kill Coronavirus within just 30 seconds.
According to the report published in Times of India, the study was conducted by the Dr HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences at Panjab University in collaboration with the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH).

The researchers who were part of the study found that the mouthwash in 0.2 percent concentration can kill over 99.9 percent of coronavirus in just 30 seconds.
Dr Ashish Jain from Dr HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences who is also the author of the study said that it is initial result from lab studies. Clinical studies are needed, he added.
