Sam, who spent three and a half years incarcetated, is a leading criminal justice activist who founded Ladies of Hope Ministries to help women exiting prison reenter society. The Ladies of Hope Ministries operates the Hope House, which provides housing and job training in the Bronx for people recently released from prison.
The training program, the Grow with Google Career Readiness for Reentry Program, focuses on how to apply and secure jobs in middle-skills positions, which require education or training beyond a high school diploma but not a four-year college degree.
While official data is limited, a 2018 study of 5 million recently incarcerated men and women found an unemployment rate of 27%. That rate exceeds the estimated national rate during the Great Depression, according to the Prison Policy Initiative, which published the report.

In honor of Second Chance Month, Google has launched the Grow with Google Career Readiness for Reentry program. Through this program, the tech giant hopes to expand upon its already existing social justice initiatives.
Fueled by $40 million in grants from Google, the program will be led by the Center for Employment Opportunities, Defy Ventures, Fortune Society, Ladies of Hope Ministries and The Last Mile. These nonprofits will join together to teach participants how to search and apply for jobs online, how to make a resume using web-based tools and how to send professional emails.
