As spring has now sprung, I found myself wondering where the phrase “hope springs eternal” came from.
As a lifelong learner, “hope” is one of those concepts I have pondered most of my life. Is hope inherent in all of us? Is it what keeps us going?
In my research for this article, I learned that this saying was coined by the poet Alexander Pope in An Essay on Man in 1732: “Hope springs eternal in the human breast.”
It quickly became one of the most referenced expressions in history. There is even a 2018 film called “Hope Springs Eternal.” (The summary of the film did not appeal to me.)

The Archbishop of Canterbury has appointed Katie Harrison to the Lambeth Palace team as his new public affairs adviser.
Katie comes to Lambeth Palace from Savanta ComRes, where she directed the Faith Research Centre – the UK s leading commercial research centre of expertise on religion and belief. Before that, she led global corporate communications for the Christian NGO Tearfund and also spent almost eight years working in local government communications.
Katie said: I am very much looking forward to working with the Archbishop of Canterbury and his team, and to serving their ministry in the public square. This is of course an immensely pressured time, as the world responds to the devastating effects of Covid-19, and we are all in need of meaning, wisdom and hope.
