Letter to the Editor: Reelect Dretler for Select Board

I am writing to endorse Janie Dretler for the Sudbury Select Board. Janie encompasses all the qualities I want in the leader of Sudbury: hard-working, research-oriented, measured, collaborative and authentic.
During the past three years with Janie on the board there has been tremendous progress on important issues in Sudbury. She paved the way for changing the name from Board of Selectmen to the gender neutral Select Board. She has prioritized policy review, early in her tenure championing for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue Division of Local Services review of our financial policies, which led to a dedicated financial policies subcommittee. She continues to advance other policy updates in her role as chair. Developing strong processes to minimize unneeded delays in projects that cost tax payers more money is a priority for me. Our fire chief has indicated the town needs to improve response times to meet the needs of our growing community. Options provided the Select Board for the Route 20 Fire Station include an all-in approach, or a phased approach. Chief Whalen told the Board at their Jan. 26 meeting that a phased approach is more expensive. Notwithstanding this fact, Select Board members unequivocally instructed Chief Whalen to prepare the warrant article, due three days later, for the fire station in a phased approach.

I am proud to say that service to the country and community runs deep in my family – my father served in the U.S. Air Force and both of my grandfathers in the U.S. Navy. I learned there are no shortcuts to hard work, responsibility, and commitment.
As a 17-year Sudbury resident, with two children in the Sudbury Public School system, I know our community well, observing over time both challenges and positive change. During these past three years on the Select Board, and now as Board Chair, it is my priority to make sure there is equity for all residents, focusing on a safe environment and improved quality of life, and moving projects and policies forward in a fiscally responsible way.
