Students at Fair Plain East Elementary in Benton Harbor were paid a visit by Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist on Monday. He was there with the MDOT plow “Tiger,” which was named by students at the school as part of MDOT’s “Name MI Snowplow” program. Students in Roxane Gilbert’s fifth grade class chose the name after considering several possibilities. Student La’Var Crayton was glad to see the plow.
“We were the only class ion the school, in the district, like in all the schools in Benton Harbor, Michigan that ever did this,” Crayton said. “So it was pretty cool seeing our name on there with the Tiger and the truck and everything.”

March 8, 2021 Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist visited Roxane Gilbert s fifth grade class at Fair Plain East Elementary Monday morning to share the snowplow Tiger with the students who named it as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation s (MDOT) #NameMISnowplow program. A video news release of the visit is available on MDOT s YouTube channel.
When MDOT in January asked the public to suggest names for the department s 332 plows, it was Gilbert s students in the Benton Harbor school who offered the school mascot, Tiger, as the first moniker attached to any MDOT plow.

LANSING Michigan Department of Transportation snowplows now will have a special and personal touch on the department’s interactive Mi Drive map. Inspired in part by TrafficScotland.org, MDOT has started giving snowplows unique and creative names on the Mi Drive map. Current names include Plowasaurus Rex, Sir Salts-A-Lot and Snowboni, and were chosen from hundreds of public offerings.
Yes, Plowy McPlowface is on the list.
Among the submissions were three special names: Tiger, Chill Bill and Frosty, all from Roxane Gilbert’s fifth-grade students at Fair Plain East Elementary in downstate Benton Harbor. Tiger, the school’s mascot, is now the name of one of the plows along M-63 near the school.
