Slow down and hoist sails – Global shipping fleet told

Practical Boat Owner 0shares Fitting sails and slowing down could cut shipping emissions up to 40% according to a new report by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Photo: VPLP Fitting sails to cargo ships and sailing more slowly could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry by up to 40%, according to a new report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Air pollution from shipping has increased rapidly over the last decade and there are few if any plans to reduce it since the IMO has brokered a deal to enable the industry to continue to increase its pollution until 2030. Most emissions are from international shipping, so they are not included in individual countries’ reduction targets.

The global shipping industry faces a carbon tax — Quartz

May 8, 2021 The world has never had a global price on carbon. Instead, more than 60 emission trading systems and taxes have been stitched together by national governments pricing a ton of CO₂, anywhere from less than $1(Poland) to more than $120 (Sweden). A coordinated international carbon price has been stymied by bureaucracy, jurisdictional disputes, industry resistance, and worries over international competitiveness. But the blockade on international carbon price appears to be finally coming to an end. One of the most ambitious proposals has come from one of the world’s smaller countries: the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Since March, the tiny chain of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean has been advancing a proposal before the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN agency regulating the industry, to impose a $100 per ton tax on all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the international shipping industry. By 2050, it calls for a complete phase-out of

UK needs immediate programme of rail electrification to hit net zero goals

The UK needs a programme of rail electrification to be implemented “immediately” in order to meet its revised net zero commitments, according to 17 rail industry bodies, businesses and campaign groups. An open letter to transport secretary Grant Shapps says that it “will be impossible to decarbonise rail without further electrification”. The calls for electrification come after the government committed to reducing the UK’s carbon emissions by 78% by 2035. The letter is accompanied by a new report Why Rail Electrification? which sets out why – even with the development of clean new technologies like battery and hydrogen trains – the industry will be unable to decarbonise the rail network to the extent required without significant further electrification.
