NGT constitutes expert committee to look into Rourkela Steel Plant gas leak matter ANI | Updated: Feb 15, 2021 23:06 IST
New Delhi [India], February 15 (ANI): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the constitution of an expert committee comprising the Ministry of Environment, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and the Odisha Pollution Control Board (PCB) to look into the matter of suspected toxic gas leak in Rourkela Steel Plant on January 6.
The bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel in an order passed on February 11, said that the committee may co-opt two other industrial safety experts. CPCB will be the nodal agency for coordination and compliance. The CPCB may take into account earlier expert committee reports on the subject of industrial safety, including reports in recent accidents mentioned earlier, to the extent relevant, and suggest measures to be adopted for avoiding such accidents in the future,

Steel company SAIL on Wednesday reported death of four contract workers due to suspected gas leakage at its Rourkela plant in Odisha.
These workers were engaged at plant’s Coal Chemicals Department (CCD).
“The workers felt unwell at around 9 AM on Wednesday and were immediately rushed to the ICU of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) at Rourkela for treatment,” the company said in a statement while confirming their death. Further it said that it is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and stand strong with the affected families at this time of grief.

Rourkela (Odisha)/New Delhi [India], January 7 (ANI): A high-level committee has been formed to probe into the cause of the death of four workers in suspected gas leakage incident at the coal chemical unit of the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha on Wednesday morning.
In an official statement, the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) extended deepest condolences to the kin of the deceased.

A suspected gas leakage at maharatna PSU Steel Authority of India Ltd s Rourkela Steel plant in Odisha led to the death of four contract workers on Wednesday. The incident once again brutally exposes the lax safety record of one of India s largest steel producers.
The four workers belonged to a private firm and were engaged in maintenance work of the coal chemical department. They became unconscious after a suspected leakage of carbon monoxide at 9 AM and were rushed to the local Ispat General Hospital, where they succumbed after a few hours.

Company suspends two officials, promises support to the bereaved families Four contractual employees who were exposed to some toxic gas inside the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a subsidiary of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), died on Wednesday.
“Four contract workers of Star Constructions working in the Coal Chemicals Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant felt unwell in the morning. All of them were immediately shifted to plant hospital and thereafter to Ispat General Hospital,” RSP said in a statement.
