With the passing of Brenda Quade, our community has lost a great friend, a dynamic prosecutor, and a fierce advocate for victims of crime.
For more than 18 years, Brenda sought justice each day as an assistant state’s attorney in Winnebago County. Brenda’s work ethic was unparalleled in the office. During her tenure, she prosecuted juvenile, gang, gun, arson and domestic violence cases. Further, she was a leader within the office, serving as supervisor of the misdemeanor, domestic violence and juvenile units.
In 2019, Brenda was promoted to deputy state’s attorney. Brenda used her legal talents outside of the courtroom as well. She trained Court Appointed Special Advocates, presented for the citizen’s police academy, and advised the Blackhawk Area Boy Scouts. She was also a valued player in the annual “Legal Follies” event.

“Because of COVID, we had to think outside the box. So we actually created a box, a CASA Chef Box,” CASA board member Vadessa Flack said.
The CASA Chef Box is the latest in fundraising from the Court Appointed Special Advocates. They had to cancel some of their traditional events, but they still need the money to help their volunteers represent kids in the foster care system.
“They’ll check up with them, they’ll call them on the phone, take them places, any way they can to just let them know they’re is someone extra there to support them,” Flack said.

HELENA â CASA-CAN (Court-Appointed Special Advocates/Children s Advocacy Network) of Lewis & Clark and Broadwater Counties say theyâll be able to provide valentines day cards to every foster child in the greater Helena area thanks to the generosity of the community.
Executive Director Gerry Hill said the act of generosity actually stemmed from a misunderstanding. The CASA program in Great Fall decided to encourage the community to provide Valentineâs Cards to children who are in foster care. MTN picked up the story which then inspired Helena resident Karleen Hanson to contact CASA of Lewis & Clark and Broadwater Counties about doing the same thing.

The DeKalb County Sheriff s Office is doing No Shave February to raise money for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for children.
Sheriff Nick Welden explained the idea comes from a meeting a few months ago between the group and the Sheriff s Office. At the time, Lt. Jeff Bain, Capt. Brad Edmondson and myself decided we would attempt to put a fundraiser together to help CASA. We continued to move forward with this much needed assistance even after the tragic passing of Lt. Bain. We know he would want the same, for he had a huge heart for helping children, just as we do, said Sheriff Welden.
