‘Night to Shine’ will feature participant parade The “Night to Shine” event benefiting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities has been re-imagined this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the past several years the event has featured a prom held at a local church.  This year, however, the event will feature a drive-thru participant parade up and down Main Street from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. Organizers are inviting the community to cheer for participants, while practicing safe distancing, or cruise in their own vehicles.  The event is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.  CASA seeks volunteers to advocate for children

For Goodness Sake: Hall-Dawson CASA

Janet Walden, executive director of the Hall-Dawson CASA program, keeps an empty picture frame on the windowsill of her office. It’s a simple item with a deeper background that perfectly represents the purpose of CASA. Walden explained that the empty frame represents every child in the local foster care system, who she said deserve to have their picture on someone’s refrigerator. “I wonder sometimes about the kids that we serve and who has their picture on their refrigerator, that’s why I do this work,” said Walden. “I want every child to have their picture on somebody’s refrigerator.”

Resolve to make this year a better one for a child who needs you

Resolve to make this year a better one for a child who needs you Brownwood Bulletin Joanne McGraw is the recruiter/trainer for CASA in the Heart of Texas Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957. As we are beginning a new year and preparing to honor Dr. King this month, this is a good opportunity to ask this question of ourselves. Volunteering and helping others has been found to benefit both physical and mental health, and there are a variety of options in our community. If you are looking for a unique and long-term way to make an impact in your community, consider becoming a CASA volunteer, or Court Appointed Special Advocate®, and helping children and families right here in Brown county.
