N.J. man accused of stealing 4 ATMs from Newark businesses, police say

A Newark man is accused of stealing cash machines from locations around Newark during a three-week crime spree, city officials said.
Leonardo Aquino, 34, was arrested on Dec. 20 and charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of burglary tools in connection to the stolen ATMs, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement released Thursday.
The first theft happened on Nov. 22, when the cash machine was stolen from an apartment building laundry room. Police say two men were seen on security cameras taking the machine out of the room.

Charisse Ates of East Orange was killed in a Wednesday night shooting in Newark, authorities said Thursday. She was 38 years old.
Ates was on the 100 block of South 8th Street when she was shot, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said
She was taken to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead just before 9:40 p.m.

Duo ran illegal bar out of basement of Newark home, police say

Two Newark men were arrested Monday after police discovered they were running an illegal bar out of a city home, authorities said.
Argeni Castro-Taveras, 36, and Jesus Vilanueva, 28, both of Newark, were charged with maintaining an illegal liquor establishment, illegal possession of alcohol and illegal sale of alcohol, according to a release from the Newark Police Department.
Police were called to a home at 33 Taylor St. shortly after midnight after they received reports of a large party happening in the basement, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement.

A pair of Newark women were arrested for running an illegal bar and throwing a 200-person party complete with gambling amid the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities said.
Detectives from the Newark Police Division’s Vice Crimes Task Force investigated reports of a large party at a warehouse located at 6 Libella Ct., where two women were selling alcoholic beverages from behind a makeshift bar around midnight Sunday, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said.
More than 200 patrons were eating, drinking alcohol and participating in illegal gambling in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ambrose said.
The women were identified as Denisse Tinizaray, 26, and Katherine Tinizaray, 28, both of Newark, Ambrose said.
