After an emergency meeting of the Nepal Cabinet on Sunday morning Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the country s parliament on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli following a political stalemate over an executive order issued last week. The Nepal President s Office issued a statement in the afternoon, stated that the House has been dissolved on recommendation of Oli and the council of ministers. It further said the next election will be held in two stages in April-May 2021.
The first phase of polling has been scheduled in April 30 and the second phase on May 10. President dissolved Parliament as per the Article 76, clause 1 and 7, and Article 85 of the Constitution of Nepal, according to the notice issued. The upper house of Nepal is National Assembly and the 275-member House of Representatives, is the lower house of Parliament, whose last election was held in 2017.
PM Oli s Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Prachanda s Community Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) had been at loggerheads for decades before the two decided to put aside their differences in 2017 and contest the elections as an alliance.
Together, they won 174 seats in the 275-member house forming the National Communist Party but all has not been well since.
When the alliance formed the government, a power-sharing agreement was brokered between PM Oli and Prachanda which would see the former serve as prime minister for a period of two-and-a-half years before the latter took over the top spot for the remaining two-and-a-half years. However, the deal has never been ratified with PM Oli constantly delaying its tabling at the General Council.
