Daytona Beach city manager to retire after 47 years in government

DAYTONA BEACH  If Jim Chisholm s missile launcher pitching arm and talent for darting into an end zone with a football had taken him farther than high school championships and a college scholarship, he might have never found his way to Daytona Beach. And if he hadn t grown bored working for financial companies in his late 20s, he might have never become a city manager who applied in 2004 to become Daytona Beach s next city manager. If Chisholm had never sat behind the desk in the big City Hall corner office overlooking Ridgewood Avenue, the Daytona Beach Pier might have stayed under private ownership and deteriorated into an even more dangerous and crumbling eyesore than it was when the city purchased it.

Volusia County weather forecast: Dry spell continues into next week

Sunday was mostly sunny, with a high near 79, with a northeast wind around 15 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph. Monday and Tuesday should be mostly sunny, with a high near 81 and continued wind from the northeast. The wind is forecast to pick up Wednesday and Thursday, with gusts up to 30 mph, and a 20 % chance of showers.   Friday will be slightly warmer, with a high near 82. Windy, and wind gusts up to 25 mph.   “Next weekend looks like it’s going to be dry with diminishing wind, which will be a good thing,” said Kelly. “People will be happy to get a respite from the winds. Temperatures look like they re going to stay quite tolerable, with highs, generally in the low 80s along the coast, and mid 80s over the interior of Volusia County.”

The Daytona Beach Pier has been repaired and anglers are welcome back

The work was relatively minor routine maintenance,” said Susan Cerbone, the city s spokeswoman. “The east end of the pier gets the brunt of the ocean’s force,” Cerbone said. She said the pier had to be closed because crews needed to work from the deck of the city-owned pier, which is located at the eastern tip of Main Street.  The pier is popular with anglers because it s one of the few places in the area they don t need a license to fish. It s also free to drop a line off of the pier. There’s also ocean fishing available with no license required on Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores. Fishing on Sunglow Pier, home of Crabby Joe’s Deck & Grill restaurant, costs $7 for adults and $3 for ages 11 and under.

Fishing Area Closed At Daytona Beach Pier

May 1, 2021 10:18 AM Daytona Beach, FL – The fishing area at the Daytona Beach Pier is shut down for the month of May and is expected to reopen in Early June. Other portions of the pier and Joe’s Crab Shack remains open. Nearby fishing options that require a license include the docks under the new Orange Avenue bridge, the Seabreeze Bridge with a dock on the west side, and on Main Street, where you can fish right off the bridge. No license is required at Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores, where you pay an admission fee. For ages 12 and up, it’s $7. For children under 12, it’s $3. You can rent a fishing pole all day for $7 or $3 per hour.

Daytona Beach Pier could be expanded and a reef could be added nearby

DAYTONA BEACH  Big changes could be coming to the Daytona Beach Pier, the historic building that sits atop the wooden span and Breakers Oceanfront Park. An artificial reef could even be constructed a short distance off shore to improve surfing and calm waves that batter the nearly 100-year iconic pier. The city will pay a West Palm Beach firm $173,720 to study the feasibility and costs of several possible changes. The firm will explore constructing a new pier, bolstering the existing 740-foot-long span, making an addition to the city-owned structure, renovating the building that houses Joe s Crab Shack and establishing new uses of the park that overlooks the beach. City commissioners decided at their meeting Wednesday night to hire the Wantman Group to tackle all of that.
