A long-term care and retirement home in Listowel is introducing new infection prevention and control measures in the aftermath of two deadly COVID-19 outbreaks.
Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Homes outlined the efforts being taken at its Listowel location in a press release this week, including the purchase of new cleaning equipment and additional education for staff members.

“The home conducts a minimum of 20 to 30 hand hygiene and (personal protective equipment) audits per shift,” said Lenora Belle, the home’s executive director, adding that audits are now more detailed than they were prior to the pandemic.

With active COVID-19 cases cratering in Huron-Perth, the local health unit on Tuesday declared the end of the outbreak at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Listowel.
“It has been a long, difficult road for everyone at Caressant Care Listowel,” Jim Lavelle, president of Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Homes Ltd., said in a release. “We are so pleased to see this outbreak end and can’t thank our care partners enough for their support and expertise that helped guide us through this difficult time. I also want to express my sincere condolences to families and staff, who consider our residents part of their extended family, on the passing of their loved ones.”

Residents from a Listowel nursing and retirement home hard hit by a COVID-19 outbreak connected to four deaths are being moved to area hospitals as officials work to reduce the spread of the virus.
Six residents from Caressant Care – three in long-term care and three from an adjoined retirement home – were the first to be relocated Tuesday. More are expected to follow this week.

“We recognize that this is home for residents,” said Stuart Oakley, the communications and marketing manager at Caressant Care, a long-term care and retirement home operator based in Woodstock. “The decision to transfer is not taken lightly.”
