Congress effort to unite all opposition parties against ruling BJP in Assam failed as newly floated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal announced their lists of candidates for the first two phases of polling on March 27 and April 1.
The AJP, led by the former general secretary of All Assam Students Union Lurinjyoti Gogoi, announced their first list of 18 candidates on Friday evening, hours after BJP s list was made public.
Raijor Dal, which was also formed out of the anti-CAA agitation, released names of 18 candidates, 12 for the first phase and six for the second phase. Akhil, who is in judicial custody since the anti-CAA protests in December 2019, has been fielded from the Sivasagar constituency in eastern Assam, which witnessed strong protest against the act. AJP chief Lurinjyoti will contest from the Duliajan constituency in eastern Assam.
West Bengal assembly Elections 2021 will be held in eight phases. The main contest is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress.

Kolkata, Mar 01: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Yadav is expected to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today to discuss over the pre-poll alliance between the two parties. It is reportedly said that the Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly and the TMC chief will deliberate on a possible seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming West Bengal election.
Earlier, an RJD delegation comprising of senior leaders held talks with TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is considered to be the No 2 in the ruling party. It can be noted that there is a sizeable Bihar population residing in West Bengal s Asansol, Howrah and Kolkata areas.

Once known as a kingmaker in Assam politics, Hagrama Mohilary, the chief of the Bodoland People s Front (BPF), today formally returned to the Congress fold, joining the Mahajath or grand alliance led by the state s main opposition party. It is, technically, still in alliance with the BJP till the end of this Assembly s term, one that it had yesterday declared as dissolved. How can they (BJP) win when I am not on their side? We will have to see the exit of the BJP in Assam, said Mr Mohilary, addressing a joint press conference with Congress and other Mahajath participants units in Guwahati today.
