Boynton Beach offering $5K incentive to certified police officers

BOYNTON BEACH  Police officials in Boynton Beach have added an incentive in their search for new officers – a signing bonus. Since November, the department has offered a $5,000 check for certified officers – those who have gone through academy training and passed the state exam – that join the city s police force. Interim Deputy Chief Vanessa Snow said the plan to dangle cash was hatched as an out-of-the-box solution to attract applicants who have already invested time in themselves. The inducement appears to be working. Snow reports that 26 certified police officers applied for jobs in November. In the months before, maybe one or two certified officers applied, she said.

Defense: Evidence does not point to woman in 1990 Wellington clown murder case

WEST PALM BEACH Since her arrest three years ago, Sheila Keen-Warren and her lawyers have repeatedly told investigators they have the wrong person. Not only did witnesses in Marlene Warren s home describe the person who fatally shot her while dressed as a clown in 1990 as a tall man, but her defense team also says that the hair evidence used to arrest the long-suspected shooter nearly 30 years later is misleading. In court documents made public Monday, defense attorneys Richard Lubin, Greg Rosenfeld and Amy Morse attacked evidence and outlined several reasons their 57-year-old client should be released from jail before her trial, scheduled to begin April 9.
