Lisa Vargas, 53, evaded capture for nearly a month. Palm Springs Police confirmed to News Channel 3 that Vargas is now in custody. According to Riverside County jail inmate records, Vargas was arrested on Thursday at 3:35 p.m. in Whittier. Vargas was wanted in connection to a shooting that left 33-year-old Palm Springs resident David Spann dead during an attempted fugitive recovery at Indian Canyon Gardens on the morning of April 23.

Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes will retire in August after 27 years working for the department and rising to the top of its ranks, city officials said Thursday. Reyes will continue to serve as chief until Aug. 23, according to the announcement, in order to ensure a smooth transition to a new department leader. The city has not yet said when or how it will begin recruiting for a replacement.  Reyes was hired as a patrol officer with Palm Springs Police Department in 1993 after serving in the United States Marine Corps. He rose to the rank of police chief in February 2016 after a short tenure as acting police chief following the retirement of former chief Al Franz.

North Gene Autry Trail reopened from Vista Chino to the I-10

The police department sent out a notice at 8:08 a.m. Wednesday morning.  The road had been closed due to due to high winds and blowing sand, according to previous Desert Sun reporting. There also was a traffic collision early Saturday which resulted in the death of Dalia Valle, a 26-year-old woman from Cathedral City.  The crash occurred about a quarter-mile south of Salvia Road just before 6 a.m. Saturday, according to a Riverside County Sheriff s Department coroner s report released Sunday.
