Coachella Valley winds close roads and cause inconveniences for residents
Winds over the weekend hit peaks above 70 mph for areas like Whitewater. Gusts for areas in Desert Hot Springs reached above 60 mph winds. The valley floor was also included, Palm Springs Airport hit a peak gust of 45 mph.
Over the weekend, Palm Springs Police Department tweeted that N Indian Canyon Between Tramview and Palm Springs Station Rd closed due to low visibility from blowing sand and dust. Monday morning, that road was opened. Monday morning, N. Gene Autry between E. Via Escuela and Salvia Rd. remained closed. Palm Springs Police said they will evaluate conditions early Tuesday morning for a possible reopening. In the meantime, when N. Gene Autry is closed, you can use E. Vista Chino as an alternate route.
Defense Attorney: ‘Bail agent’ charged with murder shoots gun at command of PSPD officer
New questions are arising after Fabian Herrera s defense attorney, Rajan Maline, told News Channel 3 on Friday that Herrera fired a gun at the command of a Palm Springs Police officer during a tense confrontation the morning of April 23. Herrera, 36, was charged with murder in the killing of David Spann, 33, at Spann s Palm Springs home. Mr. Spann was wanted by a bail agency for violating terms of his bail. He was not wanted by the courts, he was not wanted by law enforcement and there was no warrant out for his arrest, Palm Springs Police Lt. William Hutchinson told News Channel 3 s Shelby Nelson in a previous interview.
Unlicensed bail agent to argue self-defense in deadly Palm Springs shooting, attorney says
The man who investigators said was posing as a bail agent when he shot and killed a Palm Springs man last month appeared in court Tuesday. He s facing a murder charge that could put him in prison for the rest of his life.
Fabian Herrera is charged in the deadly shooting of David Spann, 33, who police said was murdered on April 23 in his home on Via Escuela. They said he was working as a bail agent without a valid license, and tried to bring Spann into custody in the middle of the night.
Rescue crews aided four hikers, one of whom was injured and flown to a local hospital, in three separate incidents in the Coachella Valley on Thursday.
The Riverside County Sheriff s Aviation Unit Rescue 9 participated in each of the rescues and reported the incidents on Facebook.
The injured hiker was the third call the helicopter unit responded to.
The Palm Springs Police Department requested the help of the sheriff s department at about 8:45 p.m. following reports that someone was heard calling from help.
Two sheriff s department helicopters responded, Palm Springs police Sgt. Frank Guarino said.
The first helicopter found the man on his back, flashing a light, in a mountainous area west of a cul de sac in the area of La Mirada and West Sunny Dunes roads, Guarino said.
Shooting investigation underway in Palm Springs

Police say a person was shot on Friday in Palm Springs, but no one has been taken into custody.
The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. in the area of Granada Avenue and Palm Vista Drive, according to the Palm Springs Police Department. Patrol officers found shell casings in the roadway, and evidence a person had been injured.
A short time later, a local hospital reported a gunshot victim was being treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Police withheld the person s name and age, and did not offer a motive for the shooting.
