A year later, Fayetteville remembers George Floyd, fights for change

Lee has participated in protests the past year on behalf of Black mothers, she said. She said though she doesn’t know what it’s like to lose a son at the hands of a police officer using lethal force, she has a son who died at the age of 30.   “I talked with plenty of mothers, uncles, grandfathers, whites or Blacks, different nationalities, and they’re (police) killing us,” said Lee, who is Black.   Lee said she thinks there are some good police officers, but said she thinks the ones who have used lethal force against Black people are full of hate.

Troy Williams: FSU s Allison is 2 months in, is he doing a good job?

When Darrell Allison was introduced to the Fayetteville State University community last February, the room was filled with people wearing masks. The world was still in the worse pandemic of the century. It was a tough start for FSU’s new chancellor-elect, but crisis leadership generally determines how sound executives are. Allison has moved quickly since officially taking the reigns as chancellor on March 15. Last week, he surpassed 60 days on the job. Two months is a short time, but to some, it’s an important marker, measuring Allison’s early achievements. In response to the chancellor’s “First 60 Days,” I reached out to some faculty members, staff, and community stakeholders to gain a perspective on how well they thought he is performing thus far.

Cumberland County joins Freedman s Bureau Transcription Project

Multiple organizations in Cumberland County are helping tell the county’s history through the Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project.  The Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project is an effort to transcribe the Freedmen’s Bureau records. The bureau was a government department that was in charge of supporting previously enslaved persons in their transition to freedom and citizenship, according to a news release from the Cumberland County library. The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History and Culture has worked with the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission and the State Library of North Carolina to shine a light on a hidden part of history in the Freedmen’s Bureau, formally known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, the release said.

New initiative to re-enroll thousands of HBCU students

Southern University is not the only HBCU doing such outreach. The United Negro College Fund, an organization representing 37 private historically Black colleges and universities, recently launched a new initiative to bring 4,000 students back to HBCUs across the country to earn their degrees, aided by one-on-one coaching. The move mirrors other efforts by historically Black institutions to reclaim students who left, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected Black Americans at disproportionate rates in terms of infections and deaths, and led to job losses and other negative financial outcomes for low-income students and their families. More than five million Black Americans aged 25 and older have some college but no degree, according to Census Bureau data released in 2020.
