Senators elect 7 members to UNC Board of Governors

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The North Carolina Senate elected seven people Wednesday to the governing panel for the 17-campus University of North Carolina system.
Senators reelected to the UNC Board of Governors board Chair Randy Ramsey, discount retailer CEO and conservative philanthropist Art Pope of Raleigh and Jimmy Clark of Greensboro, the owner of a heavy transportation company. Ramsey is a boat-building company executive from Carteret County.
Board newcomers also elected to four-year terms are investment firm partner Lee Roberts of Raleigh, who was then-Gov. Pat McCrory’s budget director; security-services firm president Sonja Nichols of Charlotte; and real estate developer Kirk Bradley of Sanford.

Today is the first day on the job for Fayetteville State University Chancellor Darrell Allison. The former UNC Board of Governors member and school choice lobbyist has been under criticism by alumni, students and some faculty for the highly unusual selection process that vaulted him ahead of other candidates for the $285,000 a year leadership position.

While Fayetteville State University students marching on Murchison Road protesting the chancellor selection process is grabbing headlines, what isn’t getting attention is that more than 60% of the incoming freshman won’t be marching across the stage to get their degrees in five years.
FSU has the worse retention and graduation rate among HBCUs and other universities in the UNC university system. According to the UNC System website: “By 2022, FSU will improve its five-year graduation rate from any accredited institution to 36.0%. This is an improvement over a base of 29.9% for FSU’s 2010 cohort.”
A website graph shows FSU’s actual performance for 2019 was 39.7%. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 39.9% of Black students graduate within six years.
