A local task force that keeps data on medical emergency calls related to drug overdoses is reporting a spike in fatalities in recent weeks.
“Through information received from emergency services, an increase in suspected opioid overdoses having fatal outcomes has been identified in Timmins and the surrounding area,” the Opioid Emergency Response Task Force stated in an alert issued Wednesday.

The task force issued a similar alert in January in which it reported an “increase in deaths tied to purple heroin and other substances possibly containing opioids like fentanyl.”

Sault Ste. Marie’s top cop is optimstic the city will get provincial help to assist residents deal with opioid addiction.

“I’m getting more optimistic something is going to happen,” Stevenson told The Sault Star following a Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board meeting last Thursday. “What I’ve noticed is there’s a consistent message that people in this community need a treatment facility, a detox facility, that’s properly staffed both short-and long-term to deal with this crisis.”
