The University of Arkansas System was awarded a three-year $900,000 CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to boost the state’s workforce recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19.
Nine UA System institutions will collaborate on the project, led by the Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, to collect and analyze statewide workforce data and use outcomes to provide existing and bolstered education and training efforts through all seven of the UA System’s two-year colleges, along with two colleges of technology at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM).

Mike Phillips has been named director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the primary outreach organization for Alabama A&M and Auburn universities, both of which are land-grant institutions with the mission of providing real-life solutions and helping improve the lives of all Alabamians.
Phillips will begin his new role March 1 with the joint system referenced generally as Alabama Extension which was created in 1995 when the universities’ Extension programs were combined.

News Highlights: Debate team adapts, competes virtually
Although the pandemic hindered many campus activities, the Louisiana Tech Debate Team adapted with great success. In-person debating matches weren’t feasible this fall, but the team adapted by moving to virtual competitions.
In the season opener, hosted by Lee College in Baytown, Texas, junior communications major Kara Taylor was a starting semifinal. Skylar Dean, a senior political science major, won third place for speakers in the junior varsity division.
Junior Electrical Engineering Major Neel Patel was a starting quarter-finalist in the competition hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Tech alumnus Kendrick Kruskie, a budding competitor last year, took second place for speaker award in the professional division.
