Robert Taylor died Sunday night at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
He was 72-years-old and was serving a life sentence for 1st Degree Murder in Blackhawk County.
Iowa prisons experienced a systemwide COVID-19 outbreak in November which coincided with a statewide spike.
At that time, the union representing Iowa public workers called for a shutdown of prison admissions and transfers The outbreak has since subsided.
More than 4,400 inmates and 670 staff members have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic struck the U.S. in March of 2020. Two staff members in the prison system have died from the virus.
Being a doctor or another front line health care worker is a tough job, especially in the last year. But health care workers have been an inspiration during this unprecedented pandemic.
Just in case they’ve gotten you thinking about becoming a doctor one day, we asked two doctors at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to share some advice for aspiring docs.
Be ready to study a lot, but you don’t have to be an ‘A’ student
It’s important to remember you’ll have to spend several years in school before becoming a doctor, first in medical school and then training in a specific field of medicine. Patients expect their doctors to have the knowledge and skills to care for them.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics MyChart app has a new feature that can determine if you should get a COVID-19 test…and it also lets you schedule it.
UIHC officials say the feature should be used if you are experiencing symptoms that make you wonder if you have COVID-19 (including fever of 100° F or higher, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sore throat, or loss of taste), or have been around someone who has a confirmed positive COVID-19 test.
If you’re between the ages of 18 and 55, the new Symptom Checker service can help you quickly determine if you need to schedule a COVID-19 test or a telehealth video visit.
