Though he since has left the hospital and returned home, the virus has left lasting impacts on the 74-year-old Iowa City resident. And as a result, he has watched with growing disappointment as some residents ignore public health recommendations and state officials refuse to implement stronger mitigation requirements. “Based on my experience, I cannot understand why people have elected not to follow those simple measures,” he said, referring to social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands and other steps.

Man arrested after Sunday shooting leaves one seriously injured The Hawk Eye A Burlington man is in custody following a Sunday shooting in the area of Flint Hills Drive that sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  Larry Keith ER Knotts III, 33, 937 N. Eighth St., was arrested on several felony charges at 7:59 p.m. Sunday at the Burlington Police Department hours after a man was shot multiple times in the 2400 block of Flint Hills Drive. The arrest came after the victim and eyewitnesses as well as the GPS-equipped ankle monitor Knotts was wearing as a parole requirement tied him to the scene at the time the shooting took place.

Iowa prison inmate from Black Hawk County dies from COVID-19

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) The Iowa Department of Corrections reports a prisoner from the Iowa State Penitentiary has died from COVID-19 complications, the 13th inmate across the state to die from the virus. Dale Dean Viers, 58, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Sunday morning due to COVID-19 complications and other preexisting conditions. He was being held at the prison in Fort Madison and had been taken to the hospital several days ago for more advanced care as his condition began to worsen. Viers had been serving a life sentence for 1st Degree Kidnapping out of Black Hawk County. His sentence began on March 30, 1995.
