View Comments Iowa City police say a man who was found Sunday morning with gunshot wounds was later pronounced dead at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  In a Sunday news release, Iowa City police said the Johnson County Medical Examiner s Office was to carry out an autopsy Monday to determine the cause and manner of death. The identity of the deceased individual has not been released.  On Sunday at 1:20 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Sandusky Drive and Taylor Drive regarding several reports of shots fired, the release says. They found a car in the 1300 block of Bancroft Drive that had hit a tree.

According to online court records, a written arraignment and plea of not guilty was filed on Monday on behalf of 41-year-old Michael Lang. He’s accused of killing Sergeant Jim Smith after Smith and other troopers entered Lang’s home in an attempt to end a standoff between Lang and law enforcement the night of April 9th. Police say Lang barricaded himself in his home after fleeing from a traffic stop during which he assaulted an officer. An armored vehicle was utilized to gain entry into the home and during an exchange of gunfire between Lang and officers, Lang shot and killed Sergeant Smith. Lang was shot multiple times and transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. On April 21st, he was transferred to the Black Hawk County Jail.

15-year-old died, four other teens from Dunkerton injured in wreck Authorities have released the names of the teenagers involved in a single-vehicle accident that left one dead and three others injured in Black Hawk County over the weekend. All four teenagers were from Dunkerton. Authorities say 15-year-old Rylee Boyer lost control of the vehicle on a gravel road northeast of Dunkerton. The vehicle went into a ditch and rolled, ejecting two passengers 15-year-old McKenzie Farmer and 17-year-old Lynzi Hoffman. Sheriff’s officials say Farmer died at the scene and Hoffman was taken to a Waterloo hospital for treatment, then was air-lifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
