NORTH LIBERTY Friends and relatives traveled here to pack up Andy Pavlovec s belongings Wednesday. While doing so, they unpacked three decades worth of warm memories of him.
There were the high school years at Turkey Valley, when Pavlovec was a class cutup, once wearing the same shirt five days in a row to show what he thought of the peer pressure to be fashionable.
There was a bicycle ride across the state that saw Pavlovec and his childhood buddy repeatedly being separated, only to have a hug-filled reunion in the evenings.
And there was the knowledge that Pavlovec s organs were bound to provide life for some strangers. Pavlovec was a firm believer in recycling. His parents and three brothers found that to be a fitting footnote to his life.
A three-vehicle incident resulted in two injuries Thursday afternoon in Kalona.
Agencies responded to the intersection of 7th Street and E Avenue, or Highway 22, at about 3:33 p.m., and after speaking with two witnesses of the incident, it was determined that two pickup trucks driven by Connor Shalla of Wellman and Keegan Gingerich of Kalona were stopped on E Avenue facing eastbound, when the drivers were observed to initiate a drag race, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Both pickup trucks accelerated in an excessive manner traveling eastbound through the intersection. A third pickup truck driven by Alma Herrera of Kalona was traveling southbound through the intersection when it was struck on the rear, passenger side axle area by Shalla’s vehicle. The force of the collision ripped the rear axle off and caused the third pickup to make a 90-degree turn, eventually coming to rest outside of the roadway.

Montgomery: The state has temporarily paused giving the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine out of an “abundance of caution” while federal officials investigate reports of rare blood clots, the state health officer announced Tuesday. Dr. Scott Harris cautioned people to remember those were just six incidents out of 6.8 million doses of the J&J vaccine that have been given across the nation. “COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for Alabama. It is important to know that the adverse effects potentially stemming from the Johnson & Johnson shot have been extremely rare in the country, but out of an abundance of caution, Alabama is temporarily pausing these shots until we know more,” Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement. Some vaccine appointments were likely canceled this week, Harris said. But he said the J&J vaccine ma

The Iowa House Appropriations Committee passed a higher education budget that’s $24 million higher than the current year. However, the University of Iowa, Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa will be frozen out of the increases. On top of that, the House plan is calling for a tuition freeze.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that House Speaker Pat Grassley considers budget at the three regent universities “bloated.” He cited numbers that showed full time positions at the universities have increased 25 percent over the past decade, while enrollment only grew by 3 percent.
That brought pushback from Democratic Representative Cindy Winckler, who pointed out that the majority of that increase has come from growth at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
