Emma McClatchey/Little Village An effort by Republicans in the state legislature to eliminate tenure at Iowa’s three public universities advanced this week, as the House Education Committee passed a bill to end tenure at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa, and a Senate subcommittee approved the Senate version of that bill. Tenure prevents college professors from being fired except for good cause or in cases where the college is facing a financial crisis severe enough to endanger its survival. It is intended to shield professors from political pressure, and allow for wide-ranging inquiry and free expression of ideas.

The new GuideLink Center in Iowa City is meant to provide exactly that, without overly criminalizing or medicalizing the patient.

Johnson County COVID update: Another death, 28 cases reported Thursday

At 10 a.m. Friday, Iowa reported another 740 cases of COVID-19 and 27 additional COVID-19-related deaths  including another in Johnson County  since the state s tally at 10 a.m. Thursday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov. Officials report a total of 5,223 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 68 in Johnson County. The death reported Friday was the third this week and the 21st so far this year. The county s first was reported April 4. Deaths reported are not deaths that have occurred within the past 24 hours, but only represent deaths that were added to the IDPH dashboard within the past 24 hours. It often takes more than a week   or even two or three   for a death to be added to the IDPH dashboard after a person has died.

by Dustin Hite House Republicans spent this last week at the Capitol making great progress on some of our top legislative priorities this session, among those being access to affordable child care and additional education funding to address the added costs schools have experienced due to the pandemic. As well, the House Human Resources Committee considered multiple bills addressing the need to recruit and retain health care providers in the state. The House Education Committee considered and passed an increase in SSA/Per Pupil Funding out of committee, which was then debated by the House Thursday evening. The House passed a 2.4% increase in this funding. This increases the State Cost Per Pupil amount, including the additional $10 per pupil, from $7,048 to $7,227 and increase of $179. This also continues to address transportation equity which is raised at the same rate as SSA.
