A GRADUATE from Tynedale has helped one of the region s bakers get ahead online. Struggling to find a suitable role in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prudhoe-based journalism graduate Gemma Hirst landed a three-month internship with Print Cakes, supporting the business with her digital marketing skills. The internship was organised through Creative Fuse North East, a project unlocking the potential of the creative, digital and tech sectors to drive innovation and growth of the region’s economy. Gemma, who studied at The University of Sunderland, said: “I felt as though my job search was not going to plan, so it was great to know that after university there was still support out there for me as a graduate.”

Entrepreneur and experienced kiln glass artist Katie Hinder has secured a £17,500 start-up loan from First Enterprise Ââ Enterprise Loans to expand her glass-making business and launch a new collection.
Katie, of Long Bennington, has been creating kiln glass pieces since graduating from the University of Sunderland in architectural glass in 2007 but wanted to expand her business when she set up her current studio in 2018.
Although Katie is an experienced artist, the business loan also helped her to hone her entrepreneurial skills Ââ a side of her business she wasnât as confident about.

Team Sunderland Netball president said Philippa Nelsons said: “We’ve worked incredibly hard to try and maintain that sense of community and team spirit among the girls. “The University of Sunderland has held weekly online fitness sessions for the club, which have proven very popular with the team, and on top of that we’ve had our own virtual netball training classes. “Asking how they’ve found the online sessions, most of the girls said that little half an hour in their day has just boosted them so much and given them such a relief from the pressures of university, the news and all the chaos that has happened over the last year.”
