What if Space Junk and Climate Change Become the Same Problem?
Changes to the atmosphere caused by carbon dioxide emissions could increase the amount of debris that stays in orbit.

It’s easy to compare the space junk problem to climate change. Human activities leave too many dead satellites and fragments of machinery discarded in Earth orbit. If left unchecked, space junk could pose significant problems for future generations rendering access to space increasingly difficult, or at worst, impossible.

Minimum nurse to patient ratios in hospitals across parts of Australia have reduced the risk of death by seven per cent (PA)
New research examining the effect of minimum nurse-to-patient ratios has found it reduces the risks of those in care dying by up to 11 per cent.
The study, published in The Lancet, also said fewer patients were readmitted and they had shorter stays in hospital.
It compared 400,000 patients and 17,000 nurses working in 27 hospitals in Queensland, Australia to 28 other hospitals. The state has a policy of just one nurse to every four patients during the day and one to seven at night, in a bid to improve safety and standards of care.

But at the same time, UK industry is responsible for a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change that threatens this way of life.
In a world that must move beyond fossil fuels we face critical questions:
how do we make the substances that we need to clean?
how do we make clothes?
how do we package our fruit and vegetables?
Dr Colin Miles, Head of Renewable Resources and Clean Growth, Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) at UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), says: If we want to build an economy that truly sustains our civilisation now, and in the future, we must find ways to maintain production whilst cutting emissions to net zero, and biotech is key to that.

This week, Royal Mail announces a trial of the first out-of-sight, autonomous scheduled drone flights between the UK mainland and an island. The trial will see the Company use Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flights to deliver Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), COVID testing kits and other mail to the Isles of Scilly.
Royal Mail has also become the first to execute inter-island parcel deliveries across the Scillies, as part of the trial.
The Government-funded project, which has been developed in partnership with DronePrep, Skyports, Consortiq Limited, University of Southampton, Excalibur Healthcare Services and Windracers Limited, will initially have a particular focus on helping to fight the pandemic by delivering crucial PPE and testing kits to the islands’ most vulnerable and remote communities.
