PH gov t told to boost rabbit meat production

Published February 18, 2021, 2:00 PM Amid high pork and chicken prices, the Philippine government must now find a way to boost the production of alternative protein sources such as rabbit meat and plant-based food.  Based on a study published by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), the high pork prices now, while painful and unfavorable to consumers, is an opportunity for the country to start exploring alternative protein sources. A tale of two seas: Closed season is a mixed bag for Philippine sardines industry

A tale of two seas: Closed season is a mixed bag for Philippine sardines industry  Since 2011, the Philippine government has imposed a closed fishing season on various major fishing grounds during the sardine spawning season. Implemented during the tail end of the year until March the following year, the closed fishing season has been both a boon and bane for communities. In the sardine capital of the Zamboanga Peninsula in the country’s south, the ban has boosted catch sizes for artisanal fishers, while in the Visayan Sea in the central Philippines, catches have dwindled. Experts point to different implementations of the fishing ban in the two regions and highlight the need to assess the economic implications of the measures, particularly to marginalized fishers.

Ensure affordable chicken supply as pork prices remain high —UPLB experts

Ensure affordable chicken supply as pork prices remain high UPLB experts Published February 17, 2021 6:17pm Experts from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) on Wednesday urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to take a clear and calibrated response to address the country’s pork supply shortage. In a position paper, the UPLB Department of Economics and Management urged the DA to lift the price cap on pork and chicken meat and to focus its efforts on other interventions. “Higher prices in Manila are a consequence of limited supply. Producers will take advantage of such opportunity. It is best to let markets take its course for now while the DA focuses its efforts more on its other interventions,” it said.
