N.J. high school grad is nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
Updated Feb 20, 2021;
Maria Ressa, a Filipino-American journalist and 1982 graduate of Toms River High School North, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to the district, published reports, and the nominee herself.
“I do want to mention, proudly, that we have a Toms River North alum nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Superintendent Thomas Gialanella said during Wednesday night’s meeting of the Toms River Regional School Board of Education meeting. “Yeah, it’s pretty impressive.”
Ressa, 57, is a former CNN Southeast Asia correspondent and the co-founder of Rappler.com, a Manila-based news site that has reported on terrorism networks and human rights abuses under the regime of Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte. In retaliation, Ressa has been subject to harassment and multiple arrests, according to her Rappler bio.

+ February 20, 2021 ONE BLESSING that the pandemic has given me is the opportunity to catch up with friends I have not been able to spend time with over the years but I hold close to my heart, and I marvel at their achievements and new discoveries as well.
One such dear friend whom I look upon as a little sister, wali in Kapampangan, is Maria Lourdes Limbitco Nunag, or Malou as we fondly call her.
I first met Malou when I was a newbie at the City Government of San Fernando, Pampanga and she was still a college student at the University of the Philippines doing her internship at that time. Since her parents both worked at the City Hall too, we were able to keep in touch through the years and I was very proud of her accomplishments as a young professional who rose through the ranks in the corporate world.
