Guest opinion: How agriculture helps Southwest Florida s ecology © UF/IFAS File Photo/Special to The News-Press Tara Wade As a natural resource economist for the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), a big part of my job is to help growers reach their economic and conservation goals in efficient ways. Agriculture plays an important role in sustaining and improving Florida’s natural resources. We can increase this role by measuring the economic value of the ecological services that growers provide and by using that information to help implement policies that reward agricultural stewardship. Farm economic sustainability is closely tied to environmental sustainability. Practices and technologies that reduce chemical inputs help to reduce costs and the amount of chemicals lost to the environment. Practices and technologies that help improve soil health which may reduce chemical leaching or soil erosion may also improve crop yields.

Dogfish Miami to Open Wynwood Taproom May 21

Today, Sam Calagione tells New Times, he s especially thankful to be launching his latest endeavor with the opening of the Miami brewpub after more than a year since the globally recognized brand announced it would be taking over the Concrete Beach Brewing space in the heart of Wynwood. We began brainstorming our brewing and menu concepts and the area s potential for local partnerships back in 2020, Calagione says. We did our best to roll with the punches through the pandemic and make lemonade or beer out of the lemons or starfruit thrown our way. Calagione s lemons-to-starfruit comparison is a nod to one of his favorite new brews, the Star Pucker, a sour IPA infused with locally grown fruit sourced by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences. The beer, made especially for Miami, is a perfect example of the brewery s growing partnerships with a number of local businesses and other organizations throughout the Miami community.  For ever

City considers creating urban forestry program | Sarasota

1 month ago Share As part of a continuing emphasis on tree preservation, officials heard a presentation on a strategy for more formally documenting and managing the city’s canopy. Robert Northrop thinks the task of developing a comprehensive strategy for maintaining and growing a robust urban tree canopy will be relatively straightforward for Sarasota officials as long as the community sees it as a priority. Northrop, a forestry faculty member with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension in Hillsborough County, gave a presentation at the April 19 City Commission meeting on the process of putting together an urban forestry management program. Northrop was the principal author of Tampa’s urban forestry plan, and city staff brought him in as a precursor to considering a similar endeavor locally.
