Researchers from two Northwest universities are wondering about the most effective way to get Covid testing supplies to Native American and Latino people. They’ve received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to test their ideas in Washington and Montana.
Alexandra Adams from Montana State University is the principal investigator of the project known as Protecting Our Communities.
“What we know is that the Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected people who identify as American Indian or Hispanic/Latino, she said.
Part of that is because people in those communities often struggle to access health care. So Adams and her research colleagues at the University of Washington School of Medicine picked out a strategy.
Pregnant women with Covid face MUCH higher risks: Mothers-to-be were 20 times more likely to die before giving birth and their infants may have to spend more time in NICUs, study suggests
Researchers compared 706 pregnant women who had contracted COVID-19 and 1,424 pregnant women without the disease from 18 countries
Infected mothers-to-be had a 76% higher risk of preeclampsia - high blood pressure in pregnancy - and were 59% more likely to give birth prematurely
Expectant women with COVID-19 were five times more likely to be admitted to ICUs and 22 times more likely to die
Fever and shortness of breath were linked to 2.56 greater risk of maternal complications and 4.97 times higher risk of complications for infants

Danville Area Community College in Illinois will allow students to take any summer course for free if they prove, in person or via email or text, that they were vaccinated. Students may still need to buy books or lab equipment, but tuition and fees for the course will be waived, according to the college’s website.
Julia Jackson-Newsom, associate vice chancellor for strategy and policy at UNC Greensboro, said despite the blunt enticements, students are having a hard time deciding whether to get vaccinated. She described “really nervous” students coming to the campus vaccination clinic and asking staff if getting vaccinated is the right choice.
