Jan 20, 2021 ELIZABETHTOWN On Thursday, Jan. 8, 25 students joined the third class of the Elizabethtown Community Hospital’s Paramedic Education Program. The hospital’s auxiliary is dividing $5,000 scholarships among four of those students, including one from Wilmington. Matt Levenson has served for 25 years in pre-hospital emergency care as an emergency medical technician, ski patrol member, AEMT and as part of the Wilmington Fire and Rescue backcountry and swift-water rescue teams. For Laura Sells-Doyle, president of the Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary, supporting paramedic students has been a priority since the program began in 2018. “We are so fortunate to have this level of training available in our rural region, and to have students dedicated to serving their communities,” said Sells-Doyle. “In an emergency, these folks answer the call, day or night, and never know what they will encounter. Officers responded at 12:33 p.m. after the man lost control and struck a tree while skiing down the Upper Approach Trail. Essex County Coroner Jerod Heidrick responded to the scene and pronounced Bernhard T. Kahlau, of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, dead. His body was taken to the University of Vermont Health Network at the Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh where an autopsy was completed on Wednesday. The cause of death was determined to be a cervical skull fracture due to the accident, State Police said.
