A 28-year-old father and his 3-year-old were killed after their kayak overturned on Lake Champlain Friday afternoon, according to New York State Police.
Patrick S. Wells and his 3-year-old son, Beckett L. Wells, both of Willsboro, NY in Essex County, were both found unresponsive in the water about 2:20 p.m., troopers said in a news release Monday.
Police said the two drowned due to hypothermia and cold water exposure.
The temperature of the water this weekend was about 45 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. A person can become unconscious in as little as 30 minutes and can die in one to three hours in water that cold.

In the wake of blood-clotting disorders in six young women who had been vaccinated with the single Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, neurovascular neurologists and hematologists address questions about assessing risks and managing the side effects.
Neurologists are getting queries from anxious patients in the aftermath of a nationwide “temporary” pause in administration of the single-shot Janssen/Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. As of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Janssen vaccine were administered around the country. Two days later, it climbed to 7.2 million doses.
The pause, requested by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on April 13, came in the wake of reports that six young women, ages 18 to 48, had developed serious blood clotting problems after receiving the vaccine. At press time, one woman had died, four others had not recovered yet, and one woman was discharged home.

BENNINGTON â Two doctors said Tuesday that retrying Leonard Forte would endanger his already poor health â statements that the case victim heard during her first time back in a Bennington courtroom since Forteâs original trial in 1988.
Dr. Robert Lobel, a cardiologist with the University of Vermont Medical Center, said itâs âan incredibly bad ideaâ to ask 79-year-old Forte to travel back here from Florida given his various heart ailments.
Forte is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Landgrove in 1987, after he retired as an investigator with New Yorkâs Suffolk County District Attorneyâs Office. He was convicted the following year on three counts of sexual assault, but the presiding judge ordered a new trial, saying the female prosecutor had prejudiced the jury by being too emotional.
