Five Deborah Heart and Lung Center healthcare workers walked into the auditorium with blank expressions on their faces.
They were about to take the COVID-19 vaccine Thursday at their Pemberton workplace, and they were nervous, they said. But then they sat down at different tables around the room, took their shots and smiled.
Several Deborah executives, administrators and other employees also attended the event in the auditorium, and they started clapping once the shots were done and the bandages were on.
With that, the first COVID vaccinations in Burlington County were complete.
Jenni Blood, a respiratory therapist, Sharon Corbett, a unit coordinator, Carolyn German, a nurse, Dr. Michael Neary, an anesthesiologist and Tina Welz, an environmental services employee, were the five Deborah healthcare workers who took the initial doses.

New Jersey is planning to open six coronavirus vaccination “mega-sites” across the state early next year as it rolls out inoculations in phases, with an aim to vaccinate 70% of its adult residents within six months, state officials announced Friday.
The state is also setting up a network of more than 200 satellite vaccination sites including hospitals, health and urgent care centers, chain pharmacies, and local sites, Gov. Phil Murphy said at his latest coronavirus briefing in Trenton.
“We expect the demand for the vaccine will outpace the supply,” sate Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said. “So we will need to initiate vaccine sites in phases to assure equitable distribution.”

Healthcare workers administered shots to their colleagues across the nation this week, beginning the next long-awaited phase of the pandemic since it began in March.

While each vial is supposed to hold five doses of the first vaccine authorized for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration, Politico was first to report on Wednesday that pharmacists have discovered some vials may have extra doses, potentially adding to the country s supply. The amount of vaccine remaining in the multidose vial after removal of 5 doses can vary, depending on the type of needles and syringes used, a Pfizer spokesperson told USA TODAY in a statement. At this time, we cannot provide a recommendation on the use of the remaining amount of vaccine from each vial. Vaccinators need to consult their institution’s policies for the use of multidose vials.
