MILLIONS of pounds in damages were paid out last year following serious mistakes made at a Southampton hospital. Data from NHS Resolution, which handles such cases on behalf of the NHS, revealed 58 clinical negligence claims against University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust were successful in 2019 to 2020. A total damages bill of £3.1 million was paid out in relation to these claims over the year, while further legal costs totalled £411,614. Successful claims against the trust were up 71 per cent compared to the 34 reported in 2018-19, when £6.3 million was paid in damages.

ONLY two Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the Hampshire County Council area today compared to 11 over the weekend. Covid numbers are continuing to worsen across the Winchester district with a new hotspot emerging in the southern parishes of Denmead and Southwick, close to Portsmouth. In those two villages in the last seven days 82 cases have been reported, an increase on the week before of 68, a rise of 485 per cent. The rolling number per 100,000 people would be 799.5, amongst the worst in the country. In Winchester city itself the numbers are edging up. In Winchester East, which comprises Winnall, St Giles Hill, Highcliffe and Bar End, there were seven cases, down four, for a rolling number of 85.9.
Four were on Saturday and seven today according to the Office for National Statistics. After three days of 30+ cases in the Winchester district the figures for Saturday and Sunday was 27 on both days. Two weeks ago the number was four. The worsening situation can be seen by the fact that in the last seven days to today there have been 183 cases in Winchester district, compared to 76 in the week previously. In total there have been 2,046 cases since the start of the pandemic, up from 2,019, giving an infection rate of 1,638.6 since March. In the seven days to last Tuesday, December 15, the Press Association national news agency reports there were 151 cases locally, compared to 55 in the previous seven days.
SEVEN more people have died in Hampshire s hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus. Figures published by NHS England on Sunday reveal that seven more people have died with Covid-19. Across the whole of Hampshire, 829 people have now died in hospitals since the start of the pandemic. At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, seven more patients have died, bringing the total up to 336. Two patients at Hampshire Hospitals Trust have died, taking the total to 232. At University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust there have been a total of 230 deaths, and at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust there have been 23 deaths.
