THERE has been no recorded Covid-19 related deaths across Dorset hospitals for a week, according to figures from NHS England. More than 20,000 appointments missed at University Hospitals Dorset

MORE than 20,000 appointments were missed at University Hospitals Dorset during 11 months of the Covid-19 pandemic, figures show. And the hospital trust, which covers the Royal Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole hospitals, potentially lost more than £3 million as a result. The failed appointments waste time and heap pressure on consultants who already face “extraordinary demand” due to the virus, says the British Medical Association. NHS Digital data shows that in the 11 months from April last year, there were 21,675 outpatient appointments which people did not show up for. It means out of 263,850 booked sessions, eight per cent were unattended. And with the average outpatient appointment costing £160 – as estimated by several NHS trusts – the no-shows may have cost University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust around £3.5 million.

Tributes left as hospital chaplain Canon Jane LLoyd dies

A LONG-SERVING chaplain at Poole Hospital and former president of the College of Health Care Chaplains has died suddenly at the age of 68. Canon Jane LLoyd (née Naylor), who established, led and has been at the forefront of the chaplaincy at Poole Hospital for over 30 years, died at home on April 12, following a short battle with cancer and treatment at the hospital. Described as a “visionary” by her husband Canon Nigel LLoyd, Jane used her position at the hospital to start up the bereavement centre at Poole Centre, in particular the area of neo-natal death. Having started out as an industrial chemist, she and Nigel met when they trained alongside each other at the Lincoln Theological College in Lincoln.
