Pa. flu cases down 97% and COVID precautions alone don’t explain why
Updated 10:18 AM;
It is unprecedented in recent flu seasons and mirrors national trends the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say flu activity has been “usually low” this season. Cases in Pennsylvania are down so much the health department won’t release a county-by-county breakdown of cases because to do so risks identifying flu patients.
Statewide there have been 3,351 lab-confirmed flu cases and 18 flu-associated deaths as of April 10, according to the weekly flu activity report released Tuesday by the health department. When a positive lab test is reported to the state, it’s logged as a confirmed flu case. The flu’s been detected in all 67 counties, resulting in 43 flu-related hospitalizations this flu season.
Pa. extends pause on Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccines
Updated Apr 15, 2021;
Pennsylvania is extending its pause of the use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine until April 24 or until there is updated federal guidance.
Federal health officials on Tuesday recommended the pause as they review the cases of six women, including a Pennsylvania woman, between the ages of 18 and 48, who had potentially serious blood clots 6 to 13 days after receiving the vaccine. This is a rare event as 6.8 million Americans have already received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Pennsylvania initially recommended a pause until April 20 to give the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration time to review the incidents of rare blood clots. The health department is now pushing that to April 24 or when the federal government issues new guidance.
