News Briefs: Fee to fix flooding, college visits, fish fry time, art show, summer jobs and more in Hampton

Bills for new stormwater fee mailed Jordan Tax Service, which collects taxes for Hampton Township, recently sent out bills for the new Stormwater Management Fee being levied to help pay for state and federally mandated work to control flooding and reduce water pollution. In January, Hampton residents were notified by letter about the new fee, which is $115 for a single-family residence. Residents who pay the bill at one time will receive a 2% discount. Greater Latrobe, Deer Lakes among area schools lauded for computer science diversity

Several area schools are among a little more than 1,100 nationwide being recognized for helping to promote interest in computer science among female students. Greater Latrobe, Deer Lakes and East Allegheny high schools and Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy are among 22 public schools in Pennsylvania that have received the 2020 College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. The schools qualified for the recognition by having female students represent 50% or more of those enrolled in one of two Advanced Placement courses AP Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A. Schools also could receive the award based on female students who took a related AP exam that offers the opportunity for college credit.

There were two very different headlines on stories on the same topic, Pittsburgh Brewing Co. moving its Iron City Beer production from Latrobe to East Deer, in the Feb. 5 Tribune-Review Westmoreland (“City Brewing in Latrobe to lose Iron City account”) and Valley News Dispatch (“Something big on tap: Pittsburgh Brewing Co. to move into old PPG plant”) editions. This sums up the issues of struggling industrial towns in Westmoreland County, far from the center of the area, Greensburg. It’s like they are in another state.
