Christina Gagnon scored five goals to go with three assists, Frannie Hahn and Kendall Steer had three goals apiece and Caitlin McElwee added two goals. Josie Hahn and Lauren Steer each had two assists. St. Paul’s jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Leah Warehime made four saves. It’s the first regular-season defeat of McDonogh by an IAAM team since 2008. The Gators then beat Bryn Mawr (Md.) 15-10 on Saturday. Gagnon and McElwee had three goals and one assist apiece, and Lauren Steer, Josie Hahn and Frannie Hahn all contributed two goals apiece, with Lauren Steer adding two assists. Warehime made eight saves.

Student-led Educraft creates educational products for children

Print For a class project, a group of Canyon Crest Academy students have started a business that sells art kits designed to teach children ages 6 to 12 about the environment, social issues and other topics. CCA junior Haewon Chung, the company’s CEO, came to the U.S. from South Korea two years ago. She said she used that experience and her interest in art in starting the business, which they named Educraft. “The idea for my business came from my background,” Haewon said. “I used to draw since I was a fifth-grader and I took it pretty seriously.” She also drew from her experiences switching high schools multiple times, which contributed to her interest in creating an educational product.

Corporate scholarships announced for local students

Print Two dozen San Diego County high school seniors have been awarded corporate-sponsored scholarships in the first group of winners in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Roughly 1,000 distinguished students have won the awards nationally, chosen from finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Corporate sponsors provide scholarships for finalists who are children of employees, residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. Most awards are renewable for up to four years of college and provide stipends from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some are a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.

Back to school: San Dieguito expands to four days a week in-person

Print San Dieguito Union High School students were able to return to school in-person four days a week on April 12. After spending the majority of the school year in distance learning, the district started with just one day back on March 16 and expanded to two days the following week. After spring break, students were able to opt to return to school four days a week in-person or remain in distance learning. With the expanded reopening, students have gradually been returning to school more students have returned in the northern communities of the district than the southern part. According to the latest numbers submitted to the San Diego County Office of Education on April 12 (prior to the four-day-a-week reopening), the most high school students have come back at San Dieguito Academy High School where 44% of the school’s 2,000 students have returned. At La Costa Canyon, 40% have returned and at Canyon Crest Academy, 21% of the school’s 2,466 students are learning in-person.
