Nine members of the Canyon Crest Academy Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club got the opportunity to return to the San Diego Food Bank April 23 for a group volunteer shift. Safety protocols in the spacious warehouse enabled the volunteer group to work in a socially-distanced but closely connected environment. The CCA JOI Club’s evening task involved sorting and bagging fresh fruit and vegetables, specifically apples, oranges, onions, and potatoes. In total, the shift prepared 5,900 pounds of produce bags for distribution within the community.
After all the tumult at the San Dieguito Union High School District – with the appointment of new board member Ty Humes, the resignation of Superintendent Robert Haley, and the appointment of interim Superintendent Lucile Lynch – my hope was that the community would give the district some breathing room to regain its footing and engage in a fresh start.

The San Dieguito Faculty Association (SDFA) announced that it has launched a petition asking the San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) to hold a special election to fill a seat left vacant after Area 5 trustee Kristin Gibson’s resignation.
In a press release, the SDFA stated that it wants due process and constituent voices to be heard in the selection of a new school board member.

“We believe that voting is an important part of the democratic process,” said Duncan Brown, president of the SDFA in a news release. “People serving on the governing body of our district should be elected in a way that reflects the wishes of the constituents of Area 5, to ensure that their interests are fairly represented during any school district decision-making process.”

For six of the 12 years that Carmel Valley teenager Amanda Zhang has been in school, her favorite extracurricular activity has been working on the yearbook staffs at her middle and high schools.
So when Zhang knew she’d be yearbook editor-in-chief for her senior year at Canyon Crest Academy, she was so excited she started planning out the book’s theme and design a year in advance. Then came the pandemic.
Like students at high schools all over San Diego County, Zhang and her 40-member yearbook staff had to find a new way to memorialize a school year when the campus was closed, sports were cut or postponed, plays and concerts were performed online and annual traditions like the winter formal and prom were canceled. And even though these students found creative ways to remotely produce their yearbooks from home, is there a market for annuals that celebrate a mostly lost school year?
