It was a special school lunch special: Heroes were on the menu.
On Friday, May 7, the Washington Township School District joined the School Nutrition Association in celebrating the eighth annual National School Lunch Hero Day. The staff was recognized for its “dedication, hard work, tenacity and ability to adapt to change on a daily basis.”
“In March of 2020, our normal operation just stopped,” Washington Township food service manager Jennifer Mullin said. “Everything that we were used to doing changed, and we only had one day to adjust to the ‘new normal.’ We stopped serving meals for one day only. On March 17, we were serving meals remotely with lots of help from the operations and transportation staff out of the high school 9/10 parking lot.

CHESHIRE â Bringing a background in restaurant and hotel management to the job of feeding thousands of students every day, Erica Biagetti said she wants to grow the school systemâs food services program through more engagement with students.
Today (May 7) is School Lunch Hero Day.
Director of Child and Adult Nutrition Services for the South Dakota Department of Education Cheriee Watterson says it’s a day to celebrate the hard work and dedication of school nutrition professionals. She says throughout the pandemic, it was almost like adding another meal service program in order to manage meals for students in school buildings and for those learning remotely.
School nutrition employees balance many roles and follow federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias offer students low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.
