Green Bay area Memorial Day ceremonies return to in-person this year

View Comments GREEN BAY - Green Bay-area residents will be able to return to Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, a year after the coronavirus pandemic forced veterans groups to cancel events or honor fallen service members virtually.  Volunteers have been busy this week placing flags on veterans graves in cemeteries across the Green Bay area ahead of in-person events scheduled over the course of Monday. A statewide commemoration of the holiday will remain virtual, though. Memorial Day is a day to remember veterans who have died serving the United States. Its roots go back to Decoration Day, started in the years after the Civil War when soldiers would adorn the graves of soldiers who died in the conflict with flowers. It has been a national holiday since 1971.
