Its director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor remains at the top as the state with the most infections at 2,082 cases, followed by KL Federal Territory with 540 cases, and Sarawak with 405 cases.

Picture by Miera Zulyana KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 The current nationwide Covid-19 effective reproduction number (Rt) continued to stay in the 1.13 range recorded yesterday as cases continue to soar in the country. In a tweet, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham showed that the Rt has increased slightly yesterday from 1.11, but remains below the 1.14 rate two days ago. Dr Noor Hisham said that Kedah remains the state with the highest Rt at 1.31, with Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Terengganu, Melaka, Johor, Selangor, Perak, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur all recording infectivity rates of more than 1.0.

Tighter controls for those travelling from Singapore

PUTRAJAYA: Travellers from Singapore will have to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine instead of the usual 10 days from Thursday. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was decided at a National Security Council meeting on May 7 due to the discovery of Covid-19 variants of concern (VOC) in the republic. “The decision was made based on reports by the Singapore’s Health Ministry that three VOCs as well as a variant of interest (VOI) from India were found to have spread locally within the country, ” he said in a statement yesterday. Dr Noor Hisham said the meeting also decided to suspend the Malaysia-Singapore Reciprocal Green Lane for business travellers from the same day.

Whole of society approach needed to battle virus, say experts

PETALING JAYA: Speak out when you see someone not following Covid-19 precautions, say health experts. They implored Malaysians to be proactive by advising those who do not follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) or by reporting them to the authorities. Public health specialist Asst Prof Dr Mohammad Farhan Rusli from the International Islamic University of Malaysia said the public should be community monitors and point out those who do not abide by the SOP. “We must also be brave to tell them to comply with the SOP. It is no longer about safeguarding one person but an entire country and, ultimately, the entire world.
