80% Of Covid-19 Infections In Malaysia Sporadic, Not Part Of A Cluster

Covid-19 is already in our communities, said the Health Director-General (DG). In a joint press conference with Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today (11 May), Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah explained that 80% of coronavirus infections recorded in Malaysia are sporadic – meaning that the infected person had not travelled to high-risk areas or had close contact with infected patients. The Health DG also raised concern about the increasing appearance of new variants of the Covid-19 virus in Malaysia. He explained that there are four “variants of concern” and three of these variants have been successfully identified in Malaysia including; the United Kingdom (UK) variant, South African variant and a recently identified variant from India.

Take extra precautions

PETALING JAYA: Health experts have urged younger Malaysians to take extra precautions against Covid-19 and reduce their movement as an increasing number of severe cases are being seen in lower age groups. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) medical epidemiologist Assoc Prof Dr Malina Osman said from epidemiological data, the distribution of cases is higher among young people but the mortality is proportionately higher among those aged above 50. However, “in the current situation, information from the field indicates more younger patients are exhibiting more severe manifestations and the number who have died from the infection is relatively higher than before, ” she added.
