KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 The growing number of Covid-19 patients in Malaysia who have to be put in intensive care units (ICUs) is due to reasons such as an increased number of younger patients having severe symptoms, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today. Dr Noor Hisham said studies would be undertaken to check the variant of Covid-19 that such younger patients were infected with.

Hospitals are overwhelmed

PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 cases in the country has seen yet another spike, with Malaysia recording 4,498 new infections. Despite the number of new cases dipping below 1,000 at the end of March, it has been slowly increasing for the past few weeks, finally breaching the 4,000-mark yesterday. The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases now stands at 432,425. In a Facebook post, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also highlighted the growing strain on the public healthcare system as ICUs in hospitals are overwhelmed. “On May 7, the country recorded 506 cases in ICU, the highest since the pandemic started, with 295 cases requiring ventilator support, ” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 7): Daily new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia surged to 4,498 today – the fifth highest number reported in a single day – from 3,551 yesterday, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement. Today s figure was also the highest in over three months, with the previous spike being 4,571 cases on Feb 4. The country s highest-ever tally of daily new Covid-19 cases was 5,728, reported on Jan 30. The ministry also reported 22 more deaths – six in Sarawak; three each in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Kelantan; two each in Johor and Perak; and one each in Sabah, Kedah and Perlis. This raised the total Covid-19-linked fatalities to 1,632.

KUALA LUMPUR: Continuous buying support in selected healthcare, industrial products and services counters pushed Bursa Malaysia to end the week on a positive note, with its benchmark index rising 0.58 percent. At 5pm, the benchmark index FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) improved 9.12 points to 1,587.45 from yesterday’s close of 1,578.33. The index opened 0.34 of-a-point higher at 1,578.67, and moved between 1,573.40 and 1,590.04 throughout the day. Overall market breadth was positive as gainers surpassed losers 627 to 426, while 458 counters were unchanged, 667 untraded and 19 others suspended. Total volume fell to 5.39 billion shares worth RM3.41 billion from 6.20 billion shares worth RM4.6 billion on Thursday.
