KUALA LUMPUR: The war to curb the Covid-19 pandemic is intensifying and is now more concentrated in the Klang Valley due to its high population density and movement activities, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix, right).
Therefore, he said besides increasing the vaccination rate, strict controls had been put in place during these two weeks to curb the spread of the virus in the area.
“These two weeks is to give us time, so that we can identify the areas involved, increase screenings as well detect cases among close contacts and reduce infections within the community.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said that a Greater Klang Valley special task force has been set up to address the desperate need for beds and manpower in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
He said to Bernama that the Ministry of Health (MOH) had taken over the management and facilities of various agencies and ministries under the Emergency Ordinance. However, when the emergency ends, non-ministry (MOH) facilities must be returned to their respective agencies and ministries.
Although it is called the Greater Klang Valley special task force, Dr Adham said that it includes south Perak, west Pahang, and the northern part of Negri Sembilan.
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 figures reached an all-time high with 9,180 new cases.
The number of cases surpassed the previous record of 9,020 infections on May 29, right before the country entered the first phase of the National Recovery Plan on June 1.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the bulk of the cases were in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur where many areas were under the enhanced movement control order.
Selangor recorded 4,400 cases, also a new daily record for the state. Kuala Lumpur was second with 1,271 new cases.
“The rise in infections in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is expected following the increased targeted screening exercises at factories and other areas.
PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry is pumping in resources to bolster healthcare capacity in the Klang Valley, said Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.
This comes as the capacity in healthcare facilities – including the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) Covid-19 Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment centre – reached their limits.
The Health Minister noted that the number of patients referred to MAEPS had greatly increased with the centre now receiving 800 new patients daily on average and 200 Category 4 patients on average.
“Out of 5,198 beds in MAEPS, the 154 beds allocated for Category 4 patients have exceeded maximum capacity.
“The remaining beds for Category 1, 2 and 3 patients are also nearing the limit,” he said as he announced a slew of measures that the Health Ministry is taking to address the dire situation.
