Real estate lawyer Andrew Petersen replaces Anna Buchly in the top seat New Zealand’s Bell Gully has named Andrew Petersen as its new chair amid a number of senior promotions across the firm. Petersen – who leads the firm’s projects and real estate department – replaces Anna Buchly after almost three years in the role, who steps down to resume her full-time practice as a corporate lawyer covering capital markets, M&A and private equity. Petersen has been at Bell Gully for almost two decades, having joined from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in 2003. As well as Petersen’s appointment, the firm has also made three partner promotions – banking and finance lawyer Jennifer Gunser and experienced litigators Blair Keown and Kirsty Dobbs.

Ex-Davis Polk Atty Calls Firm s Fee Push Unjust In Bias Suit
Law360 (January 28, 2021, 3:55 PM EST) A Black former Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP associate suing the firm for race discrimination urged a Manhattan federal judge to reject the firm s push for nearly $100,000 in attorney fees, saying the exorbitant hourly rates could discourage other potential bias suits.
Kaloma Cardwell urged U.S. District Judge Gregory Woods in a Wednesday memorandum to slash a recent fee request from Davis Polk s counsel, Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison LLP. The request, which stems from a motion to compel discovery, is premised on sky-high rates only appropriate for corporations and rich individuals and would cripple Cardwell, he argued.

New York firm also brings in corporate partner from Kirkland & Ellis to bolster new San Francisco office
By kropic1; Shutterstock Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison is pressing ahead with its plans to open a San Francisco office with the hiring of four experienced Northern California partners. Melinda Haag, Walter Brown and Randy Luskey join the firm’s litigation department from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, with Jeremy Veit joining the corporate department from Kirkland & Ellis. The four new arrivals will form the foundation of the firm’s Bay Area expansion, alongside litigation partner Meredith Dearborn who joined in the summer from Boies Schiller Flexner when Paul Weiss first revealed its West Coast expansion plans.
