78 Bangladeshis, foreign nationals arrive from Thailand

A group of 78 Bangladeshis, Thai and other foreign nationals arrived in Dhaka from Thailand on Saturday.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok facilitated the repatriation of the passengers by special Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 4089.
The flight was arranged on a self-payment basis in line with the Bangladesh government’s commitment to extend all possible assistance and support for repatriation of Bangladeshis stranded abroad, said a media release on Sunday.
The Biman Bangladesh flight arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 5am on Sunday.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Thailand Mohammed Abdul Hye thanked the Thai government for extending their cooperation in the repatriation of the stranded Bangladeshi nationals.
Saudi expat, Biman employee held with gold worth Tk 2.21cr at Dhaka airport

Customs officials detained two, including a Saudi expatriate, along with 18 gold bars weighing 3.4 kg at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early today.
The detainees are Momenur Rahman, a Bangladeshi living in Saudi Arabia, and his associate Nazrul Forayzi, an employee of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, customs officials said.
Momenur smuggled the gold hidden inside a portable light into the country on the SV802 flight that landed at the airport around 12:30 am.
As Nazrul was assisting Momenur to leave the airport s green channel smoothly, the officials intercepted both of them and asked whether they had any gold, or taxable items with them, Abdus Sadek, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, told The Daily Star.

28 gold biscuits found inside Biman aircraft at Dhaka airport
Twenty-eight gold biscuits have been recovered by Customs intelligence officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
In a press release sent to the mass media on Friday afternoon, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said 28 gold biscuits were found inside an international flight (BG-5046) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines after it arrived at Dhaka from Dubai at about 1:59am today (Friday). The seized biscuits, weighing 3.248 kilograms, were kept hidden beneath a seat in a unique way.
The CIID further said steps were taken according to the Customs rules. Besides, a criminal case was filed.
Flights to Middle East: Sky-high airfare adds to migrant workers’ woes
Airfare to different Middle Eastern countries has increased manifold in the last few months, putting an additional burden on migrant workers returning to their workplaces.
A year ago, a ticket to Saudi Arabia cost between Tk 20,000 and Tk 25,000 in most cases. But nowadays, a ticket to the same destination would cost Tk 90,000-95,000, recruiting association leaders said.
In some cases, expatriate workers end up paying Tk 1.10 lakh or more for a Biman or Saudi Arabian Airlines ticket, M Tipu Sultan, president of Recruiting Agency Oikkya Parishad, told The Daily Star yesterday.
