Three new shared bike and walking paths are being constructed in Rockhampton and are due to be complete by mid-year.
The infrastructure is meant to encourage physical activity and improve road safety.
The new paths will be located at:
Jellicoe Street to Prospect Street, worth $6.16 million)
Neville Hewitt Bridge to Musgrave Street, worth $6.6 million
Carlton Street to Yeppoon Road, worth $3.3 million
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said work on the $16.6 million projects began in April and was part of the jointly-funded $293 million first tranche of the Road Safety Program for Queensland announced in January 2020.
“On average, every dollar invested in cycling infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland, with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion and lower transport costs whilst also creating employment opportunities during construction,” he said.

Subscriber only Queensland s transport minister has been accused of making a mockery of community consultation after he criticised calls for heavy rail to be prioritised over light rail on the Sunshine Coast. Fairfax MP Ted O Brien said Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey inappropriately intervened with the region s mass transit consultation when he slammed the region s state LNP politicians for their comments on heavy rail. Mr Bailey on Thursday criticised the local politicians calls for a fast, heavy rail from Maroochydore to Brisbane to be a priority. He said the community discussion was focused on creating new public transport options for locals to move around the Coast, not for people from Brisbane to travel to the region.
Residents have been told to ignore misleading political propaganda after Coast politicians pushed for heavy rail to be prioritised over light rail. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey blasted Sunshine Coast politicians for urging Sunshine Coast Council to prioritise heavy rail, before throwing support behind a local light rail network. Kawana MP Jarrod Bleijie said the region could not have both a heavy rail connection to Brisbane and local light rail. We re saying people should have their say but the priority of rail on the Sunshine Coast should be from Beerwah to Maroochydore, Mr Bleijie said. The reality is if the council has its way (heavy rail) won t happen.

Brisbane City Council has questioned whether a $22 million Palaszczuk government election pledge would be enough to fill Riverwalk gaps at Kangaroo Point, despite not committing to any funding of its own to a project it expected could come in at triple the price.
The stretch between Captain Burke Park, beneath the Story Bridge, and Mowbray Park in East Brisbane features some sections of pathway, but is hampered by private land, pontoons and moorings which the council has warned would make any work âvery costly and extremely difficultâ.

Subscriber only A war of words has erupted over the notorious rail bridge junction in Palmwoods with the federal and state governments butting heads over the funding needed to fix the intersection. Calls for the upgrade of the Chevallum Road, Jubilee Drive, Margaret Street and Woombye Palmwoods Road intersection have been growing as the community banded together to demand urgent safety works in the hinterland town. Sunshine Coast Daily has launched the Pave the way for Palmwoods campaign. Nicklin MP Robert Skelton told the Daily the intersection at Chevallum Road and Woombye Palmwoods Road was somewhat of a sticky wicket with any safety upgrades reliant on the North Coast rail duplication.
